How you can get on board this great journey

Hey there,

We hope you are going well.

Our success in the 2008 Mark Webber Pure Tasmania Challenge to help raise funds for the Leukaemia Foundation and the Save the Tassie Devil Appeal, depends on your support!

The Team and the Event:

The event will be held in Tasmania from the 19th to the 23rd of November 2008. We will be competing in the ‘2theXtreme Cup’. This requires us to mountain bike, trek, kayak and white water raft through 250kms of the Tasmanian wilderness; over five days.

Why we are doing this:

Our team has a strong desire to promote the importance of leadership within a team environment. In particular we aim to explore the value of personal leadership (by exploring optimism and goal setting) and raising awareness to the importance of leadership among our peers (young males in particular).

Why we need your support:

The entry fee is $12,500 which is distributed in whole to the nominated charitable partners. The entry fee has kept us busy raising funds and we are proud to say that we have $4,000 to date. However, this positions us only one third of the way there, and so, we require your assistance to get us to the start line.

Mark Webber Foundation Charity Partners - The Tasmanian Devil Appeal

The Tasmanian Devil Appeal

Raises much needed funds to support the Save the Tasmanian Devil program. It funds high-priority research and management actions. A new and deadly disease unlike any previous wildlife disease is threatening the Tasmanian devil. Within a few years the devil's numbers in the wild have declined so rapidly that it has been listed as vulnerable to extinction, under State and National legislation, and if trends continue it will become endangered. People the world over love the Tasmanian devil. It is an icon and a symbol of Tasmania. With the extinction of the Tasmanian tiger in 1936, the Tasmanian devil is now the world’s largest meat-eating marsupial. The appeal monies will establish an insurance population safe from the disease, where healthy devils produce healthy pouch young capable of being released to the wild in the future; develop ways of protecting healthy devils from becoming infected, and investigate different anti-cancer drugs. All of these strategies depend on having sufficient funds.

Mark Webber Foundation Charity Partners - The Leukaemia Foundation

The Leukaemia Foundation

The Leukaemia Foundation is dedicated to the care of kids and adults with blood cancers. The Foundation provides all of its services free to patients, such as driving them to and from hospital, providing accommodation in apartments during treatment (average length of stay is 6 months), home visits by nurses, counselling and financial assistance with bills.

The Foundation also funds cutting edge research into better treatments and potential cures. Leukaemia is the No. 1 form of childhood cancer so the Foundation is committed to funding research grants and scholarships for talented scientists to study causes, diagnosis and treatment.

We are doing the 2008 Mark Webber Pure Tasmania Challenge

Hey all,

We hope you are all doing well and enjoying life. This Tasmanian experience will encompass 250kms of pain and pure beauty. The endeavour requires the both of us to mountain bike, trek, kayak, abseil and white water raft through rain forests and over mountains for five days. You may think this is a crazy man’s idea of a good time. But we disagree!

The Mark Webber Pure Tasmania Challenge was inspired by the Australian Formula One driver with a dream to create an event that combined his love of keeping fit in the great outdoors, and raising funds for Australian charity organisations.

Therefore, instead of shaving our heads, growing moes or whatever other inspiring things people do to contribute to the community, we thought we would do somethingwe would love (and probably hate sometimes).

As a consequence we are competing in the ‘2theXtreme Cup’ and to ensure we get to the start line, we are asking for your assistance. Most of us have probably been touched by some form of cancer amongst family and friends. So the best part about the entry fee is that it goes to the Leukaemia Foundation. Funds will also go to the Save the Tassie Devil Appeal.

Consequently we require $15,000 to get ourselves to Tasmania and to enter the event. We have already raised $4,000, so we only have $11,000 left to raise.

Whether you would like to personally sponsor our cause, provide corporate sponsorship, or know of other avenues we may be able to exercise which will assist, please let me know. In the next two weeks we will be posting further information highlighting how you can formally get on board and share the journey with us!

Kind regards,
Derek & Nathan
